Sperm whales blow bubbles to sleep upright without sinking

Researchers at the University of St Andrews have found that sperm whales blow air bubbles while sleeping, a mechanism that helps them maintain a stable vertical posture at the water's surface. The whales float motionless in an upright position, and the bubbles appear to regulate their buoyancy during rest. The finding sheds new light on how these deep-diving mammals achieve restful sleep without drowning.
