Sunlight-Levitated Tracers Could Fill Atmosphere Sensing Gap at 30–100 km

Rarified Technologies proposes lightweight structures kept aloft by photophoresis — levitation powered by sunlight — that can hover for months at controlled altitudes of 30–100 km. Satellite-based lidar or radar would track them, measuring wind, temperature and pressure in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere — a region critically under-monitored by existing systems. The tracers are designed to produce strong, tunable backscatter at standard remote-sensing wavelengths.
