Psychiatrist from Jena: processed food damages gut microbiome and harms the brain
Martin Walter, psychiatrist and director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Jena University Hospital, argues that the gut microbiome plays a far greater role in brain function and mental health than previously assumed. Processed, low-fibre food disrupts the microbiome's composition, potentially contributing to depression and anxiety disorders. Walter emphasises that a diet rich in vegetables, fermented foods and fibre is essential for mental well-being.
