Google seeks to release 32 million sterile mosquitoes in California and Florida

Alphabet's Debug initiative has asked US federal authorities for permission to release up to 32 million sterilised male mosquitoes in California and Florida. Sterile males don't bite or carry disease; when they mate with females, the eggs fail to hatch, reducing the overall mosquito population. Australian field tests of a similar approach offer valuable lessons for the project.
