Lycopene from tomatoes shields neurons from Parkinson's-like brain damage in mice
Scientists fed lycopene — the natural red pigment found in tomatoes, pink grapefruits and watermelons — to mice with artificially induced Parkinson's-like brain damage for three weeks. The compound appeared to support the dopamine transporter (DAT) protein, which recycles spent dopamine back into neurons. Mice receiving lycopene showed markedly better brain function than the control group.
