The Dog Line at Eaglehawk Neck: how chained dogs guarded Port Arthur convicts
In the 1800s, a line of up to 18 chained dogs stretched across the 100-metre-wide Eaglehawk Neck in Tasmania, Australia, designed by John Peyton Jones to prevent convicts from escaping Port Arthur. The dogs were chained close enough to almost touch snouts but not attack each other; oil lamps and cockle shells on the ground helped sentries detect any movement. The Dog Line remains a notable historical attraction in Tasmania today.
