Giant green Baltic Sea vortex is a phytoplankton bloom signalling ecosystem crisis
NASA's Landsat satellite captured a massive green vortex over the Baltic Sea, identified as a large-scale phytoplankton bloom. Scientists warn the phenomenon signals deepening environmental problems, including the expansion of oxygen-depleted dead zones on the seabed. The blooms are driven by eutrophication of Baltic waters, caused mainly by agricultural runoff.
