Was there ever an original "Odyssey"? Scholars still debate Homer's authorship

The earliest surviving fragments of the Odyssey date back more than 2,000 years, but oral storytelling about Odysseus is considerably older. Scholars continue to debate whether a single authoritative text by Homer ever existed, or whether the epic evolved over centuries of oral tradition. The discussion has been renewed by Christopher Nolan's latest Hollywood film based on the poem.
