New Polish Antarctic Station nearly complete — futuristic building hovers above ground
A new building for Poland's Henryk Arctowski Antarctic Station, located about 120 km from the Antarctic Peninsula, is nearing completion after nearly 50 years of continuous operation since 1977. The futuristic structure, resembling a ship hovering above the ground, houses laboratories, a gym, a sauna and a greenhouse — and had to be entirely prefabricated in shipping containers. Construction is limited to the short Antarctic summer and is repeatedly halted by winds exceeding 150 km/h.
