Archaeologists search for Mieszko I's palace on Gniezno's Lech Hill
Lech Hill in Gniezno continues to yield new clues about the origins of the Polish state. Archaeologists are searching for a palatium — a stone palace of the early Piast rulers — believed to lie beneath the church of St George. While similar structures have already been found in Poznań and on Ostrów Lednicki, Gniezno remains an archaeological puzzle. Historians are certain that such an important stronghold must have had a monumental residence.
