US Senate blocks bid to halt AI prior authorisation pilot in Medicare
The US Senate voted 46-50 along party lines on Thursday to block a Democratic measure that would have halted a Trump administration Medicare pilot using AI to approve or deny patient care. The programme, known as WISeR, introduces prior authorisation into original Medicare, where the practice is rarely used. The White House had opposed the Democratic bill, and Medicare officials circulated a handout to lawmakers highlighting the pilot's benefits.
