Bacteria in German uranium mine feed on radioactive contamination
Scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the University of Granada have discovered bacteria living in the flooded tunnels of the closed Wismut GmbH Schlema-Alberoda uranium mine in Germany that metabolise radioactive uranium as a food source. The microbes have nearly completely cleaned the contaminated mine water. The finding, comparable to radiation-eating fungi found at Chernobyl, could open new avenues for bioremediation of radioactive contamination.
