80th anniversary of Augustów Roundup: NKVD abducted and killed some 600 Poles
On 12 July 1945, NKVD and SMERSH units launched what became known as the Augustów Roundup, abducting and most likely murdering around 600 residents of the Augustów and Suwałki region. It remains the largest unsolved Soviet crime committed on Polish territory from that period. The perpetrators were never held accountable and the full fate of the victims remains unknown.
