What not to say to someone with a chronic illness — phrases that hurt despite good intentions
Well-meaning phrases such as "You'll be fine," "You can't give up" and "Think positive" often cause more harm than comfort to people living with chronic illness. The natural urge to console can end up minimising real suffering. The advice is to listen and be present rather than trying to "fix" the situation.
