Boston unearths one of oldest known gravestones of a free Black American, dated 1729
The city of Boston has discovered one of the oldest known gravestones of a free Black American, a man also known as Sebastian who died in 1729. He is buried alongside founding fathers Samuel Adams, John Hancock and Paul Revere. His story sheds light on the realities of slavery and freedom in the northern colonies before the American Revolution.
