Worms and microbes clean up manure pollution, cutting methane and water contamination

California dairy farmer Anthony Agueda uses a vermifiltration system — red earthworms and microbes — to clean manure wastewater on his farm. The method can dramatically cut emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, as well as reduce water pollution. Vermifiltration is one of several techniques farmers, companies and scientists are exploring to address the growing environmental pressure on the livestock industry.
