Ovaries may function like an immune organ after menopause

Research on aged mice found that ovaries become heavily infiltrated by immune cells associated with widespread inflammation after menopause. Scientists believe a similar transformation may occur in women, potentially explaining some of the chronic health issues linked to the menopausal transition. The findings point to a previously unrecognised role of the post-menopausal ovary as an immune-like organ, opening new avenues for research.
