Wild berries picked off the bush risk dangerous echinococcosis infection
Experts warn that eating unwashed wild berries — such as blueberries, raspberries or wild strawberries — can lead to echinococcosis, a serious parasitic infection caused by the Echinococcus tapeworm. The disease is difficult to detect early and can cause severe damage to internal organs. All foraged or garden-picked fruit should be thoroughly washed before eating, regardless of how fresh it appears.
