Tadeusz Kościuszko: the Polish hero Americans couldn't pronounce for 250 years
Two hundred and fifty years ago, Tadeusz Kościuszko arrived in Philadelphia as a slim, unknown 30-year-old Pole with a broken heart. For two centuries, Americans struggled to spell and pronounce his name, producing variants such as "Koskajusko", "Cusaisko" and "Kostewshkaw". New Yorkers who use the Kosciusko Bridge linking Brooklyn and Queens have long since given up and simply call it "The K."
