Food web complexity explains biodiversity's effect on ecosystems

Analyses across marine, lake, stream and soil ecosystems published on 1 July 2026 in Nature show that food web complexity is the key mechanism linking biodiversity to multi-trophic ecosystem functioning. Greater species richness produces more complex feeding networks, which in turn enhance ecosystem stability and productivity. The findings help explain why biodiversity loss can undermine ecosystem services.
