Every month, all the major streaming services add a host of newly acquired (or just plain new) shows, movies, and documentaries into their ever-rotating libraries. So what’s a dedicated reader to watch? Well, whatever you want, of course, but the name of this website is Literary Hub, so we sort of have an angle. To that end, here’s a selection of the best (and most enjoyably bad) literary film and TV coming to streaming services this month. Have fun.

Does a Legally Blonde prequel make any narrative sense? No, it does not. Why would she have to learn the same lesson twice? Why not just remake it entirely? Well, perhaps that will be answered for us in this television show. (Probably not, though.)

Enola Holmes 3

Netflix, July 1

Literary bona fides: based on the Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer (2006-2023)

In the franchise’s third installment, Millie Bobbie Brown is back as Enola Holmes—younger sister of Sherlock—who must, it appears, rescue her more famous brother. On her wedding day, no less!

Little House on the Prairie

Literary bona fides: based on Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder (1935)

The beloved book series (and beloved long-running TV adaptation) is getting new life as a Netflix series. General online sentiment: “they better not screw it up…”

The Five Star Weekend

Literary bona fides: based on The Five-Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand (2023)

In this adaptation of Hilderbrand bestseller, Jennifer Garner stars as food blogger Hollis Shaw, who, after the death of her husband, organizes a weekend in Nantucket with a group of friends from all the stages of her life. Chloë Sevigny, Regina Hall, D’Arcy Carden, and Gemma Chan are the friends, which bodes well, and Timothy Olyphant pops up as an old boyfriend. Could do worse.

Reminders of Him

Literary bona fides: based on Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover (2022)

The Hoover adaptation march continues, but this time without any fun Blake Lively drama.

Lucky

Apple TV, July 15

Literary bona fides: based on Lucky by Marissa Stapley (2021)

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the eponymous Lucky in this miniseries based on Stapley’s novel, in which a lifelong grifter—now on the lam and on her own—finds a winning lottery ticket and has to figure out how to cash in without getting caught. Annette Bening, Timothy Olyphant (again!), and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor also star.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 4P was fully revealed on the China page of DJI's website earlier this month, and I've already taken my test sample traveling, but tech journalists like me across the globe are in an awkward position, still being under embargo with our review content.

What I can tell you now, is that the Pocket 4P is available in black or white, has a new 60mm medium-telephoto lens with a large aperture, offers DLog2 support and up to 17-stops dynamic range. The rest is under wraps, or publicly available on the DJI site by selecting the China region (中国大陆).

I can, however, share some of the footage that I've shot with DJI's first dual-lens model in its hugely popular series of Pocket vlogging cameras . I'll say it now — I love its versatility and am really impressed with the videos I have been able to create with it.

DJI must have been hoping for a dramatic reveal of its first dual-lens vlogging camera, only for Insta360 to somewhat steal its thunder by launching the Luna Ultra first. I've already tested the Luna Ultra and said it's a super impressive first generation product.

That's the competition the Pocket 4P is going up against, and I look forward to sharing my comparisons between the two models soon. Until then, you can enjoy my Pocket 4P sample reel, above.

Like I say, I can't reveal any specs related to the video, though at the least it should be pretty obvious which clips are shot with the ultra-wide lens, and which clips are shot with the new 60mm medium-telephoto lens.

We can get a rough ballpark on pricing, too. According the DJI site, the Pocket 4P Standard kit costs CNY 3,799 (about $562 / £420), and the Vlog kit is listed at CNY 4,299 (about $636 / £475).

The single-lens Pocket 4 starts at £429 / AU$749 for the Standard kit, or £549 / AU$959 for the Creator Combo, however, so I expect the Pocket 4P to cost more than those price conversions above.

Insta360's co-founder already told me it ' won't compete on price ' — it's Luna Ultra starts at $769.99 / £649 / AU$1,229.99. My prediction, therefore, is that the Pocket 4P will sit roughly in the middle between the Pocket 4 and Luna Ultra, but don't expect US availability any time soon.

The Make America Healthy Again movement wants for no enemies.

For the past two years, seed oils, sugary drinks, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and childhood vaccines — and the industries behind them — have been subjected to unprecedented scrutiny. Yet MAHA’s quest to vanquish the root causes of chronic disease has omitted an obvious foe: alcohol.

Though drinking causes more deaths in the U.S. each year than infectious diseases and opioids combined, the movement and its leader, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have largely sidestepped alcohol.

STAT’s investigation finds that the Trump administration has downplayed alcohol’s risks and actively derailed efforts to understand and prevent drinking-related harms, all while doing favors for the expansive alcohol industry.

Even Kennedy, who has professed a deep interest in fixing the nation’s patchy addiction-treatment infrastructure, has offered no plan for dealing specifically with the country’s favorite drug. Most of his investments so far focus on opioids or specifically on homeless Americans, and pay little attention to excessive alcohol use in the broader population.

To date, the administration’s most noteworthy actions on alcohol have consisted of burying a report that concluded light drinking poses risks; eliminating over half the staff at a federal agency focused on substance use; closing the alcohol program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and altering dietary guidelines to eliminate suggested drinking limits. That erasure is rippling through government: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism removed information about the health risks of moderate drinking from its website in January, according to archived versions of the page.

“If you’re truly committed to improving all of these different ills in society, and you’re going to stay blind to alcohol, you’re not really that committed to it,” said Mike Marshall, CEO of the U.S. Alcohol Policy Alliance, a key nonpartisan nonprofit working on the issue.

July, incredibly, is already here, a midpoint month in a madcap year unlike any other, and it takes little Holmesian ratiocination to deduce that you, Dear Reader, could almost certainly use a bit of a break, a chance to curl up on a sunny day with a book in your hands.
