Research from the University of California, Berkeley shows that tobacco companies played a central role in the rise of ultra-processed foods. They acquired or founded major food brands and transferred their marketing techniques and addictive formulation strategies to the food industry. The authors argue these ties help explain why ultra-processed products are so widespread and difficult to regulate.
