Scientists build an 8-letter genetic alphabet — and RNA can read it

Researchers at UC San Diego have shown that RNA polymerase, a key cellular enzyme, can accurately read a synthetic eight-letter genetic alphabet — double the four used by all known life. Detailed imaging revealed the enzyme handles the synthetic DNA letters in ways surprisingly similar to natural ones. The breakthrough brings scientists closer to building expanded genetic systems capable of entirely new biological functions.
