At least 25% of deceased NFL players had CTE, study estimates

A study published Aug. 25 in The BMJ examined donated brain tissue from 338 former NFL players who died between 2008 and 2021, finding CTE signs in over 93% of donated brains. Researchers estimated that at least 25% of all 1,712 players who died in that period likely had CTE-related brain changes. Experts caution the donor sample is heavily self-selected and not representative of all players, and note that modern football safety measures have significantly reduced concussion risks.
