MeerKAT telescope detects hydrogen signals from billions of years ago

Using the MeerKAT radio telescope, astronomers detected neutral hydrogen signals from billions of light-years away, corresponding to a period when the universe was much younger than its current 13.8-billion-year age. The technique, called hydrogen intensity mapping, could offer a new way to chart the large-scale structure of the cosmos. The hydrogen's 21-centimeter radio signal gets redshifted as the universe expands, letting scientists determine when and where it originated.
