Ada Yonath, Nobel laureate who mapped the ribosome, has died

Ada Yonath, Israeli crystallographer and Nobel laureate, has died. She was celebrated for solving the three-dimensional structure of the ribosome, the cellular machine that builds proteins, despite widespread scientific derision that the task was impossible. Yonath pioneered a technique to protect fragile crystals during analysis, revolutionising structural biology. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
