Togo and African Union push UN to fix maps that shrink Africa
Togo's government, backed by all 54 members of the African Union, is pushing the UN to reform global cartographic standards. On Google Maps, Greenland appears nearly as large as Africa, even though the continent is 14 times bigger — a distortion blamed on the 16th-century Mercator projection. Campaigners behind the #CorrectTheMap movement call the bias "cartographic colonialism".
