NASA tests Mars helicopter blades — tips exceed Mach 1 in lab conditions

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California tested new rotor blades designed for future Mars helicopters. During tests in a simulated Martian atmosphere, the blade tips exceeded Mach 1, breaking the sound barrier. The breakthrough is expected to pave the way for larger and more capable rotorcraft on future Mars missions.
