AfD reaches for power in Saxony-Anhalt — driven by voter disillusionment

The AfD is pushing for victory in Saxony-Anhalt elections in what could be the first instance of far-right governance in Germany since World War Two. German political scientist Prof. Wolfgang Merkel says the party's popularity stems primarily from massive disillusionment with traditional parties and a collapse of trust in them. The so-called "Brandmauer" — a firewall strategy by other parties against AfD — has failed to halt the party's rise.
