Pig kidney recipients successfully received human organ transplants
Two patients who previously received genetically engineered pig kidneys from biotech firm eGenesis have now successfully received human donor organs. After the xenografts were removed, both patients returned to dialysis for several months before human kidneys became available. Crucially, the prior animal transplant did not produce antibodies that would complicate the subsequent human-to-human procedure — confirming findings from earlier primate studies.
