"Living fossils" microbe may reveal how complex life first emerged on Earth
Researchers discovered a microbe living inside ancient stromatolite communities and captured the first direct images of an Asgard archaeon physically connected to a bacterium. The two microorganisms appear to exchange nutrients and other compounds. Scientists believe similar partnerships billions of years ago may have given rise to the first complex eukaryotic cells.
