Australia approves coal mine extension: Saraji to dig until 2055
Australia's new national environmental protection agency has approved an extension for the Saraji open-cut coal mine in Queensland, allowing it to operate until 2055 while clearing koala habitat and threatened woodland. The mine exports coal for steel-making. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese denied the decision caused tensions during talks with Pacific island leaders, but climate groups sharply condemned the approval.
