Physicists identify cause of "runaway" supermassive black hole flung into space

Researchers at UCSB and UT Austin have determined that a galactic merger caused a supermassive black hole to be flung into intergalactic space. The phenomenon, dubbed a "runaway" black hole, had previously lacked a confirmed explanation. This is the first time scientists have pinpointed a galactic collision as the specific cause of such an event.
