Satellites detected Himalayan glacier speeding up weeks before Nepal flood killed over 1,000
A geophysicist at Virginia Tech found that satellites had detected subtle but measurable acceleration in the movement of ice and rock on a Himalayan glacier weeks before its catastrophic collapse on August 26 in Nepal. The resulting flash flood killed more than 1,000 people. The findings suggest that satellite monitoring of glacial movement could serve as an early warning system for future disasters.
