Satellites detected glacier acceleration weeks before Nepal's deadly collapse
A geophysicist at Virginia Tech detected subtle acceleration in the movement of ice and rock weeks before the deadly glacial collapse in Nepal on 26 August, which killed more than 1,000 people. Satellite data revealed slow but measurable shifts that preceded the disaster. The finding could help provide earlier warnings to communities at risk from similar events in the future.
