Physicists may have detected a dark matter particle in LUX-ZEPLIN experiment

Scientists working on the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment detected a single anomalous event in underground detector data that could be the first direct observation of a WIMP — the leading dark matter particle candidate. Results were presented on 1 September at the TeV Particle Astrophysics conference in Tendo, Japan. The team stressed this is not yet a formal discovery announcement; the paper is in preprint. Dark matter is estimated to make up about 85% of the universe's matter but remains invisible to all instruments.
