1,600-Year-Old Skeleton Found Inside Giant Roman Jar in Bulgaria

Archaeologists in Bulgaria have unearthed a human skeleton inside a giant Roman storage jar called a dolium, found in a Late Roman watchtower at the colony of Deultum on August 10. Lead excavator Lyudmil Vagalinski of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences believes the person hid inside the vessel during an enemy attack — likely by East Germanic tribes or Huns — and died when fire swept through the area over 1,600 years ago. Two iron knives and a belt were found alongside the remains.
