New UK PM Burnham makes sweeping pledges in first parliamentary statement

Andy Burnham, who became UK Prime Minister just 43 days ago, faced 125 questions over more than three hours in the Commons, making a sweeping series of commitments. He suggested he would scrap the first-past-the-post voting system before 2034 if reform-backing parties — including his own Labour and the Liberal Democrats — reach consensus at the next general election, due by 2029. He also hinted at capping individual donations to political parties or blocking foreign contributions, though he has declined to act on either in the short term.
