Millions of Poles living in territories annexed by the Third Reich were forcibly registered on German nationality lists and conscripted into the Wehrmacht. Historian Andrzej Chwalba and journalist Wojciech Harpula describe the dilemmas faced by residents of Pomerania and Silesia, where refusal to serve risked reprisals against entire families. The authors stress that those affected faced only "two bad choices".
