Kallas says Hormuz Strait diplomacy has yielded no results so far

EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas said Tuesday that diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz had produced “no results at the moment.”

Speaking to reporters in Wicklow, Ireland, ahead of an informal meeting of EU defense ministers, Kallas said that “the freedom of navigation needs to be respected,” insisting ships should not be charged to use previously open routes.

“For us it is important that there are no tolls, no fees, for these routes that have been open before,” she added. Ministers will also discuss protecting critical undersea infrastructure.

Her comments come after U.S. forces struck Iranian positions near Larak Island on Sunday. Washington said Iranian Revolutionary Guard personnel had been preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the strait, just days after U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. Navy had cleared mines from the international shipping route.

Trump has repeatedly declared the strait open and said 24 vessels passed through last week. But that remains a fraction of the roughly 130 ships that crossed each day before the war, while commercial traffic is still running at reduced levels.

Iran and Oman have meanwhile been discussing a temporary corridor for commercial shipping, potentially involving security fees — an arrangement that cuts directly against Kallas’ demand for unrestricted passage.

For Europe, the stakes are immediate. Around a fifth of global oil and more than 20 percent of LNG trade normally pass through Hormuz, meaning prolonged disruption risks driving up energy prices and inflation.
