Melting glaciers release mercury — Antarctic levels up 160% since pre-industrial era
Scientists have found that mercury concentrations in Antarctica have risen 160% since the pre-industrial era, with the rate accelerating sharply after the 1950s. Human-driven climate change is speeding up glacier melt, releasing additional mercury into the ocean. Record mercury levels have been detected in the bodies of marine animals.
