Human-only gene makes brain immune cells take years to mature instead of weeks
Scientists discovered that human microglia — immune cells that help shape developing brain circuits — can take four to eight years to mature, compared to just weeks in mice. The unusually slow process may help explain the remarkable complexity and cognitive abilities of the human brain.
