Massive deep-Earth plume is slowly pulling Africa apart along the East African Rift

Scientists have discovered that a vast plume rising from deep within Earth's mantle may be driving mysterious tectonic movements along the East African Rift. The finding shows that deep mantle forces are working in concert with shallower geological processes to slowly pull the African continent apart.
