NASA replaces Mars rovers with helicopters — SkyFall mission set for 2028 launch

For the first time in over 30 years, NASA has no firm plans to send new landers or rovers to Mars. Instead, the agency is focusing on aerial drones — the SkyFall mission, comprising a fleet of three helicopters, is scheduled for launch as soon as late 2028 alongside the SR-1 Freedom mission demonstrating nuclear electric propulsion. The SR-1 Freedom mission is estimated to cost $2.1 billion.
