Record breeding season pushes kākāpō population past 325 — first time in 75 years

The population of the kākāpō, the world's heaviest parrot and a critically endangered New Zealand species, has surpassed 300 birds for the first time in 75 years. On 1 September, 90 chicks were officially added to the count, bringing the total to a record 325 since recovery efforts began. The exceptional breeding season was triggered by the mass fruiting of a native New Zealand tree.
