87th anniversary: German forces dropped 46 tonnes of bombs on Wieluń on 1 September 1939
On 1 September 1939, before the attack on Westerplatte, German aircraft bombed Wieluń, dropping 46 tonnes of bombs and killing hundreds of civilians in what is considered the first act of World War II targeting civilians. Poland marks the 87th anniversary of the attack today. Jan Książek, director of the Wieluń Land Museum, described the city as "a symbol of war against humanity."
