Raindrops act like tiny lightning bolts and corrode car paint, study finds
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany, have shown that raindrops carry an electrical charge strong enough to punch through insulating coatings — not by scratching or dissolving them, but by blowing holes through them like an electric spark. The phenomenon, called "slide electrification", had been overlooked in standard corrosion models. The finding, led by Zhongyuan Ni, Rüdiger Berger and Hans-Jürgen Butt, could reshape how protective coatings and paints are designed.
