Gulags, hunger, exile — Anders' soldiers at Monte Cassino in 1944
Soldiers of General Anders' II Polish Corps had endured Soviet gulags, starvation, illness and thousands of kilometres of wandering before reaching Monte Cassino in spring 1944. They faced a fortified position that other Allied units had failed to break. For them, the battle was not merely a military objective but proof that Poland could still fight and win.
