South Korea and Japan host large US forces amid uncertainty over Trump's commitments

South Korea and Japan together host 44 percent of all US troops stationed abroad — approximately 28,500–29,000 in South Korea and around 54,000 in Japan. South Korea lives under permanent security threat from North Korea, with which it shares a direct border. Uncertainty over the Trump administration's stance on alliances is raising concerns in Seoul and Tokyo about the reliability of US security guarantees.
