NASA's proposed SHERA mission would search for Earth-like planets in binary star systems
A new preprint on arXiv proposes a NASA Small Explorer mission called SHERA (Searching for Habitable Exoplanets with Relative Astrometry) designed to find Earth-sized rocky planets in the habitable zones of Sun-like stars within binary systems. About half of all Sun-like stars near Earth have companion stars, complicating planet searches. SHERA would exploit the complex orbital dynamics of these multi-star systems to aid detection.
